The eHSRG was commissioned by the New South Wales Department of Health (NSW Health) to provide a structured evidence-based literature review on bed occupancy and issues related to its definition, measurement, use in management of performance and planning, and links with health outcomes and healthcare efficiency, safety and quality.
This review was a component of a broader collaborative study on bed occupancy being undertaken within NSW that included analyses of bed occupancy and outcomes data within NSW Health facilities. From this study NSW Health wanted to understand and identify the levels of risk and safety accompanying varying levels of bed occupancy within hospital facilities in order to determine the conditions desirable for optimal bed occupancy levels within NSW.
