Nick Haywood has formed his quartet as part of his PhD research. The purpose of this research is to develop a greater understanding of the conditions required to enable the improvising musician to maximise his/her potential to create successful, collaborative (in an ensemble sense) musical statements. The musicians are all people that Nick has performed with a lot over many years but never with all in one band.
Simple tunes are used as catalysts for spontaneous collaborative improvisations, with the complexity in the music developing from interaction and musical connectedness between the performers.
The quartet recorded a cd for ABC classic FM’s ‘Jazztrack’ with Mal Stanley late last year which will be released in 2011. Many of the pieces recorded will be performed at this concert. There are no discussions or preconceptions regarding the tunes so it is anticipated that each playing will be quite different.
Come along to this concert and hear how the tunes are developed by the quartet. It promises to be an interesting ride for band and audience alike.
