Jeremy graduated from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with distinction, where he studied with David Takeno before joining the London Symphony Orchestra at the age of 22. He has performed under conductors such as Abbado, Svetlanov, Previn and Celibidache and performed regularly with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields and London Sinfonietta.
Following a period with the LSO he was invited to join the internationally acclaimed Delme String Quartet and has since been dedicated to chamber music. As a member of the Nash Ensemble he played both violin and viola, and was also violinist for several years with the York Piano Trio, touring the USA, Europe, Russia and Japan with these renowned ensembles. In this period Williams appeared at numerous major international festivals including Edinburgh, Cheltenham, Bath, Salzburg, Hong Kong and Prague Spring.
In 1990 he formed the Beethoven String Trio of London, choosing to concentrate on the viola and has given concerts in the UK, Ireland, France, Germany and Brazil as well as broadcasts for the BBC, RTE and South German Radio. In 1995 the trio was featured on the cover CD of the prestigious BBC Music Magazine with a recording of Beethoven Trios. Williams has recorded for the labels Hyperion, Meridian, Signum, Marco Polo, Virgin and ABC Classics. Guest appearances with chamber ensembles include the Lindsays, Hausmusik and the Chilingirian String Quartet.
In 1998 Williams moved to Hong Kong where he took on the position of principal viola with the H.K Philharmonic until 2002. During this time he was also professor of chamber music and viola at the HK Academy for Performing Arts, giving master classes at the Beijing and Shanghai Conservatoires.
Williams has always had a passion for teaching violin and viola and working with chamber ensembles. When in London he was a regular visitor to Dartington and Canford Summer Schools and a member of staff for the Junior Department at the London Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
In 2003 he moved to Australia to join the Australian String Quartet, becoming Grainger Quartet in 2007. With the quartet he has toured Asia and Europe performing in venues including the Berlin Konzerthaus, Beijing Forbidden City and London Wigmore Hall.
Jeremy Williams took up the position of Lecturer in Chamber Music at Conservatorium of Music, University of Tasmania in June 2009.
