Over the past thirty years Nick Haywood has become one of the most in demand bassists and educators on the Australian music scene. He has impressive performance and recording credits with both Australian and international artists. Nick has been a featured artist on approximately 100 CD’s and has been nominated for numerous ARIA awards. He has performed at many major jazz festivals, both in Australia and internationally. Nick has presented master classes at universities and music colleges around the world and is currently a Senior Lecturer in Contemporary Music at the University of Tasmania. Research Topic - Complexity Through Interaction: an investigation into the spontaneous development of collective musical ideas from simple thematic materials The purpose of this research is to investigate the use of relatively simple themes and, indeed free improvisation, as seeds for complex interactive music performances. Of prime concern will be an investigation into the participating musicians’ musical understanding: harmonic, aural perception, stylistic preferences and other elements. There will also be an examination of the relationship between the performers themselves on several levels, as this relationship greatly determines the success of such performances.
