Whilst growing up on the family farm out near Orange in New South Wales, Robert Stonestreet began studying the horn with Campbell Barnes. High school was followed with a Bachelor of Music degree in horn performance and Honours year at The University of Newcastle studying with Geoffrey O’Reilly, then a Masters of Music from Baylor University in Waco, Texas with Jeffrey Powers. He continues to perform regularly in solo, chamber and orchestral settings whilst working on the PhD and also a Graduate Diploma in orchestral performance at The University of Tasmania. Research: Historical Developments in Writing for Low Horn Low register playing forms a vital part of any horn player’s skill set, yet it is no longer really considered a specialist skill and is often somewhat neglected. Whatever the reasons for this may be, there are many great low register moments in the horn’s repertoire, which surely require that this facet of playing receives due care and attention. There are, however, only a small number of resources available that emphasize the importance of a good low register and discuss the technical difficulties associated with it, and even fewer recognised solo works that can be performed to display these skills. Finding new resources and solo options is a part of this research into the developments in low horn technique and the influences that have changed how composers write for the horn in the lower register, both historically and at present.
