Cultural Aspects of Immigration Health CNA522

This unit is being phased out, no new enrolments are being taken.

Applicants need to have completed an undergraduate degree.

This unit focuses on the health of new immigrants to Australia and the role of the nurse as advocate. The unit is divided into two themes. Theme One provides an overview of the social model of health in Australia. It explores health issues particular to refugees and people seeking asylum, and analyses the health care services in Australia to identify any gaps or barriers to access. It examines the experience of persecution, torture and war-related trauma in relation to health outcomes. Theme Two provides an overview of immigation law and the processes in relation to new arrivals in Australia. It examines popular discourse on refugees and people seeking asylum and the impact on the mental and physical health of people of uncertain immigration status. It also considers the role of the nurse in advocating for the rights to nursing and healthcare for refugees and people seeking asylum.
