The Master of Music (coursework) is a two-year coursework award designed to suit the needs of practicing professional musicians.

Course rules and specifications apply to the year a student commences the course.

The course is designed to support advanced studies in instrumental/vocal performance and composition. Primary concentration will be given to the development of high level technical and music skills within the specialist area.

On completion of this course students should have:

  • developed advanced skills as performers and/or composers
  • acquired increased skills in their particular area
  • developed a comprehensive understanding of a wide range of repertoire and concepts
  • acquired research and communication skills commensurate with postgraduate study.

Career outcomes

Graduates of the Master of Music are engaged at all levels of the music profession, both in Australia and overseas. They enjoy successful careers as performers, teachers and administrators, or may be involved in broadcasting, journalism or as music critics.

Entry requirements

Students with an undergraduate music degree or equivalent accepted by the university will be accepted for university entrance into the program. Candidates who have been admitted to the university must also pass appropriate entrance examinations, auditions and interviews as deemed necessary by the Conservatorium.

Students completing the Bachelor of Music with Honours may receive full credit for units completed in that program into the Master of Music. Students who have completed some units in, or graduated with, the Graduate Diploma of Music (Specialisation) may apply for entry to the Master of Music and may receive credit for GradDipMus (Specialisation) units completed, as listed in the schedule and meeting requirements for the degree of Master of Music. Some credit may be available to students who have completed some units in or graduated with the Graduate Diploma of Professional Music Practice.

Fees & scholarships

Domestic students

Fees for Domestic students are based on individual unit selections. Please refer to the fees section of each unit description to work out an indicative annual cost.

Annual Tuition Fee is inclusive of the compulsory Student Services and Amenities (SSA) fee. The SSA fee for 2017 is $294 AUD.

International students

2017 Annual Tuition Fee (international students): $32,000 AUD*.
