Volunteering in Asia HMA351

This unit is suitable for all students. Although it is a pre-requisite for HMA253/353/453 (Professional Practice in Asia), students are not required to undertake the Professional Placement unit. This unit is offered subject to minimum enrolment numbers.

This unit examines the theoretical and political dimensions of volunteering (power relations, development discourses, colonial and postcolonial theory). It covers issues relating to working as a volunteer in Asia through case studies, examples, interactive seminars and presentations. Students will learn about the practical aspects of volunteering - cultural awareness and knowledge, cross cultural communication skills, dealing with culture shock, adapting to different workplace situations, rights and responsibilities of volunteers, negotiating, finding a project, how to make the volunteer experience successful etc.
