Renaissance and Reformation Europe HTA358

Examining the fourteenth to sixteenth centuries, this unit focuses on the Renaissance and the Reformation, two separate yet related historical periods (and historical constructs) which represent a major break between medieval and modern Europe. The unit examines the remarkable dynamism and creativity of Italian society and culture in the fifteenth century, with the city of Florence given special attention, as well as the break-up of Europe in the Reformation. There will be an emphasis on images as well as texts, on the painters, sculptors and architects of Renaissance Italy, on the communications revolution associated with printing, and on the iconoclasm of the Reformation.
