This unit is suitable for all students.  Although this unit cannot be counted towards a major in Asian Studies it can be used as pre-requisite to HMA253/353/453 Professional Practice in Asia

Introduction

This unit examines the theoretical and political dimensions of volunteering (power relations, development discourses, colonial and postcolonial theory).  It covers issues relating to working as a volunteer through case studies, examples, interactive seminars and presentations.  Students will learn about the practical aspects of volunteering - cultural awareness and knowledge, cross cultural communications skills, dealing with culture shock, adapting to different workplace situations, rights and responsibilities of volunteers, negotiating, finding a project, how to make the volunteer experiences successful.

25 points at introductory level in any discipline in any faculty

Teaching Pattern

Semester 3 and 5:  Intensive delivery of 6 days x 5hrs (or equivalent)

Assessment

Short 2-4 assignments (2000 words maximum) 50%.   Group project and presentation 10%.  Exam 2hr 40%

Please note: Students enrolled in HMA251 will address different essay questions to those set for HMA351.
