This unit is restricted to students progressing toward a BSc with a major in microbiology (or a food safety focus/major in the BBiotech/BBiotechMedRes), with a Credit average or better in third year undergraduate microbiology units. This unit is usually undertaken in Semester 2 and is subject to the availability of a suitable project, resources and supervisor. Students are advised to consult with the Unit Coordinator before enrolling. Interested students who have not undertaken the nominated prerequisite units should contact the Unit Co-ordinator to discuss possible entry to the unit. This unit can be counted towards a Microbiology major.
This unit consists of a one semester-long individual research project in the area of food, environmental or medical microbiology and under the supervision of an experienced researcher approved by the School of Land and Food. Normally the project will complement existing research projects of the supervisor, and the project must be agreed between the student and supervisor. It is not necessary for the student to nominate the project, although this may be possible in some cases.
The objectives of this unit are to enable students to undertake a small, independent, research project, under supervision and including development of the research plan, undertaking the research, development of associated technical skills, and analysing, communicating, and placing the results in context of the relevant body of knowledge via several traditional methods of scientific communication. Projects must be completed within a Semester, involving approximately 80 - 100 hours of laboratory research, study and writing.
