Successful completion of this unit supports your development of Physics core knowledge and skills. Through the development of this knowledge and skills you will have the necessary physics content and understanding of the nature of Science for contributing to your development as a Science teacher.
KYA212 is a course in fundamental and applied physics. We cover a wide range of topics in physics at the second year level, with an emphasis on how to use those concepts for practical applications of all kinds. We will be particularly interested in connections with engineering and astrophysics. Some learning objectives for this unit include:
- To understand the basic concepts, principles and models of physics.
- To gain skills in experimentation, and experience of the physical world.
- To use that understanding and experience to analyse situations of interest and to solve problems.
Attendance of practical sessions is compulsory for this unit. Taken as weekly sessions for on-campus enrolment or intensive block session for off-campus enrolment.

1. Describe Maxwell’s equations of electromagnetism and the laws of thermodynamics using appropriate mathematical notation, including the ability to demonstrate an understanding of the assumptions and limitations of the underlying theoretical framework. (Assessed by ATs 1, 2, 3 and 4)
2. Formulate physical problems in the areas of thermodynamics and electromagnetism and apply mathematical techniques to solve them. (Assessed by ATs 1, 2, 3 and 4)
3. Critically review the strengths and limitations of classical thermodynamics and electromagnetism. (Assessed by ATs 1, 2, 3 and 4)
4. Analyse and interpret experimental results to identify evidence for and against physics hypotheses. (Assessed by AT 2)
5. Report scientific information to colleagues and lay audiences using oral, written, numerical and graphic communication. (Assessed by ATs 1, 2, 3 and 4)
6. Critically reflect upon the multiple perspectives and constraints of teaching and learning of Chemistry/Physics, relating to learner needs and changing educational contexts. (Assessed by AT 5)*
