Introduction

The University of Tasmania offered this postgraduate coursework program for the first time in 2007. It was in response to a request by the Commonwealth Department of Education, Science and Training to fund a Commercialisation Training Scheme for research higher degree candidates. The University and the Tasmanian Chamber of Commerce and Industry have also combined to make this program available for members of the Tasmanian community.

Admission & Prerequisites

Entry requirements are a recognised undergraduate degree from an Australian higher education institution or the equivalent standard in any other approved institution, or seven years relevant work experience.

To be eligible for benefits under the Commonwealth Commercialisation Training Scheme, a candidate must also:

  • be enrolled in a higher degree by research; and
  • be a domestic student, as defined in the Act; and
  • not have previously completed equivalent training.

Candidates are not required to have previous business knowledge or experience.

Course Objectives

The objective is to provide high-quality commercialisation training for the next generation of Australian researchers and managers as a means of equipping them with the skills, knowledge and experience necessary to bring new ideas, inventions and innovations to market.

Career Outcomes

The program is designed to add value to a candidate's skill set by combining commercialisation insight, knowledge and experience with their other qualifications. These skills are highly valued in both public institutions and private enterprise in terms of career development.

Articulation to/from Course

Candidates who complete the Graduate Certificate in Commercialisation will be eligible for admission to the MBA program with full credit for the units already undertaken.

Miscellaneous Information

The program provides for significant elements of practical, non-lecture based learning where candidates are given the opportunity to participate in team-based learning exercises. A unit consists of seven 3-hour workshops held fortnightly over the standard University teaching semester. Workshops will be held on Saturdays in order to minimise clashes with candidates' other commitments.

The course will be conducted on a part-time basis by offering two units per semester over one academic year. Therefore, a candidate will normally undertake two units per semester. It is offered within the Faculty of Business and administered by the Australian Innovation Research Centre. The program coordinator is Associate Professor Jack English who can be contacted on (03) 6226 7387.
