Introduction
THIS COURSE IS OFFERED ON A HECS-BASIS TO ELIGIBLE STUDENTS. FOR ALL OTHER STUDENTS THIS COURSE IS OFFERED ON A FEE-PAYING BASIS ONLY.
The Master of Art, Design and Environment is an experientially based program that draws together creative practice and environmental awareness. Visual artists and designers will develop their technical and conceptual skills through immersive field trips to significant Tasmanian historical, industrial and wilderness locations. National and international issues and debates are explored within a regional context.
The Master of Art, Design and Environment is offered by the Tasmanian School of Art at Hobart. It can be completed in a minimum of three semesters full-time or a maximum of three years part-time.
These course rules and specifications apply to students commencing the MADE in 2008. For students who commenced prior to 2008, the applicable course rules are those from the year of commencement. i.e. students who commenced in 2005 should refer to the 2005 Handbook.
Admission & Prerequisites
To qualify for admission, applicants must demonstrate, during an interview process, or by application for international students, and through a portfolio submission, the potential to undertake the MADE. Normally applicants should have a degree in Fine Art, Design, or in an accepted cognate discipline. A person who possesses such other qualifications and professional experience deemed by the Faculty to provide an adequate preparation for study equivalent to that provided for by an undergraduate degree may be admitted to the course.
Course Objectives
The MADE aims to develop graduates':
- understanding of the role and potential of art and design as effective tools for interpretation and interrogation of the natural, wilderness and developed environments;
- ability to employ creative problem solving and visual communication skills in addressing complex environmental, political and social issues;
- applicable knowledge comprising an interconnected mix of creative, technological and environmental histories and practices to diverse international circumstances.
Articulation to/from Course
The Master of Art, Design and Environment is part of an articulated sequence of postgraduate programs, including a Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma in Art, Design and Environment. Students who enrol in the Masters and terminate their study after completing the core units
FSZ551 Art, Natural Environment and Wilderness,
FSZ550 Art, Natural Environment and Technology and
FST505 Picturing the Wilderness (each 12.5%), a 12.5% elective and
FSA750 Professional Practices 1 (a total of 100%), may take out a Graduate Diploma in Art, Design and Environment. Students who enrol in the Masters and terminate their study after completing the core units
FSZ551 Art, Natural Environment and Wilderness,
FSZ550 Art, Natural Environment and Technology and
FST505 Picturing the Wilderness (each 12.5%) and another 12.5% elective (a total of 50%) may take out a Graduate Certificate in Art, Design and Environment.
Miscellaneous Information
Credit
Students who have graduated in the BFA(Hons) will normally be granted credit up to 50% (one-third of the total award) towards the MADE. Students with other postgraduate awards may apply for credit.
