Introduction

The Master of Police Studies is offered at the Hobart campus. It is normally a 1 calendar year (or 3 semesters) full-time or up to 3 years (or 6 semesters) part-time program. Students may enrol for semester 1 or semester 2 entry.
These course rules and specifications apply to students commencing the Master of Police Studies in 2008. For students who commenced prior to 2008, the applicable course rules are those from the year of commencement. i.e. students who commenced in 2005 should refer to the 2005 Handbook.
Admission & Prerequisites
Students are normally expected to have a minimum of a bachelor degree from the University of Tasmania or from another university or tertiary institution which is deemed equivalent. In exceptional circumstances the Faculty may admit a person with some other tertiary qualification and relevant employment experience.
Students seeking entry into postgraduate courses based on employment experience only (i.e. no bachelor degree), will generally only be allowed entry at Graduate Certificate level.
Progression from Graduate Diploma to Masters requires results of Distinction average.
Direct entry at Masters level will generally only be allowed if the student has achieved results of Distinction average at undergraduate level.
Course Objectives
The MPoliceStuds aims to provide a high quality qualification at the postgraduate level in a professional coursework-plus-thesis program. The course aims to provide students with:
- a thorough grounding in policing theory and practice;
- skills to engage in informed debate about major policing issues in contemporary society;
- knowledge of recent developments in the field;
- skills to design, conduct and appraise research critically.

Enhancement of students' careers by the achievement of a postgraduate award from a prestigious university.
The Tasmanian Department of Police and Public Safety endorses this professional postgraduate course. Indeed, its Tertiary Education Assistance Scheme (which involves Commissioner's scholarships and interest-free loans) is an incentive for eligible Tasmania Police officers to undertake postgraduate study at the University of Tasmania.
Credit
Students may apply for credit for units passed in other courses (complete or incomplete).
Tasmania Police Sergeants Course graduates are eligible to receive 12.5% credit towards the Master of Police Studies for studies completed since 1998. Tasmania Police Inspectors Course graduates are eligible to receive 25% credit towards the Master of Police Studies for studies completed since 1998.
Articulation to/from Course
Students who terminate their studies after completing 100% of the coursework units (including the core units) are eligible to achieve the Graduate Diploma in Police Studies.
