Introduction

The Graduate Certificate in Aquaculture acts as a bridging course for graduates from non-aquaculture programs who wish either to work in the aquaculture industry or to pursue a higher degree qualification in aquaculture. Traditional degrees in Australia, or those containing one or two broad based aquaculture units, lack the necessary 'hands-on' component for aquaculture and seldom provide the necessary in-depth knowledge on aquatic husbandry. The course covers the important components of aspects of commercial aquaculture: biology, husbandry, technology and animal health.

Students obtain an education in aquaculture under global conditions. They may seek careers on aquaculture farms and as research officers in fishery departments. Alternatively, graduands may proceed to the Graduate Diploma in Aquaculture and thence to the degree of Master of Applied Science in Aquaculture, or Honours.

Course Objectives

The Graduate Certificate in Aquaculture will equip students with discipline specific knowledge, skills, competencies and awareness of aquaculture to enhance their employment opportunities, or to in prepare them for further studies at the postgraduate level.

It aims to provide:

1. specialist expertise to science graduates wishing to work in the field of aquaculture.

2. advanced up-to date training for people already working in the aquaculture industry.

Career Outcomes

This postgraduate bridging program enables graduates of other courses to learn aspects of the specialist aquaculture skills necessary for work in the industry or in government policy and research departments. Alternatively, it is possible for graduates of this course to proceed to the Graduate Diploma in Aquaculture and thence to a Master of Applied Science in Aquaculture, in order to obtain expertise as a researcher.

Alternatively, those already with aquaculture qualifications and work experience can update their expertise in their chosen field of aquaculture.
