Introduction

The Graduate Diploma of Natural Environmental Management is offered in either full-time or part-time mode. The course can be studied on-campus at Hobart or by Distance Education. The minimum completion time is one year full-time; the maximum completion time is three years part-time. The course is offered by the School of Geography and Environmental Studies in the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Technology.

Admission & Prerequisites

A bachelor degree at credit level or better in any discipline from the University of Tasmania or a degree or other tertiary qualifications deemed by the Faculty to be equivalent. Students without the stated prerequisites but who have relevant professional experience and/or training may apply.

Course Objectives

The Graduate Diploma, which may lead on from the Graduate Certificate in Natural Environmental Management, is aimed at graduates from a range of disciplines who are seeking to orient their careers towards natural environment management. At the completion of the course, students will:

  • have expanded their knowledge about the values of natural environments and protected areas, the biophysical attributes of natural areas, the cultural, political, legal, institutional and social contexts in which natural environments are located and managed, the role and contribution of planning for maintaining natural area values and the methods used to address issues associate with biodiversity conservation, cultural heritage management, visitor management and incident management;
  • have developed a range of professional skills including - defining problems and formulating objectives for the conservation and use of natural areas, understanding policy formulation, evaluation and implementation, making plans and using planning instrument; and
  • have developed a professional ethic in which they are able to integrate value issues and critically evaluate the use of professional knowledge, skills and communication.

Career Outcomes

The GradDiptNatEnvMgt may lead to positions in conserving and managing natural environments. People with expertise in natural environmental management are sought after by protected area management agencies; local, state and federal governments; community organisations; and private consulting firms.

The GradDiptNatEnvMgt articulates with the Master of Environmental Management.
