The skilled professional engineer is a person who can combine a sound theoretical knowledge of the principles of engineering with engineering practice. The aim of the co-operative education programme in engineering is to allow a selection of the highest performing undergraduates to develop knowledge and practical skills by providing an integrated pattern of academic study and industrial experience that requires satisfactory performance in both areas. The co-operative education engineering programme is offered as an option to our three bachelor of engineering undergraduate programmes. The work terms bring the student into direct contact with industry and the engineering profession and adds one year to the undergraduate degree.

Co-operative engineering education is a structured method of combining an academic education with periods of practical work experience and provides academic credit for structured job experience. These periods of job experience will be with engineering employers where the students should work under the supervision of professional engineers. The programme provides students with the opportunity to better evaluate their career choices. Career choice and the choice of engineering discipline will be aided by industrial exposure during the early years of the programme. Students will also have the opportunity to gain experience in a variety of sectors of the industry and types of engineering work as well as to evaluate specific companies. This will make for a mature graduate who is more informed and therefore able to make better choices on graduation.

Career outcomes

The Co-operative programme will allow graduates to better evaluate their career choices. Graduates will have the opportunity to gain experience in a variety of sectors of the industry and types of engineering work as well as to evaluate specific companies. On graduation students will be expected to have a head start on which type of employment they would like to spend the initial part of their career. Graduates with this experience will be expected to progress more rapidly through the early stages of their career. They will have completed part of their engineering-in-training on their way to registration as a professional engineer (Member of IEAust). It is expected that they will have an accelerated process of advancement into more senior leadership positions within the industry.

Entry requirements for all Maritime Engineering courses are as follows:

Minimum Australian Tertiary Entrance Ranking (ATAR):  85

Potential students must have completed middle to upper level Maths and a Science subject (Physics or Chemistry recommended).

Domestic students who do not meet the entry requirements may undertake the Bachelor of General Studies (Engineering Pathway).

International students who do not meet the entry requirements may undertake the Foundation Studies Program (FSP).

 Students will normally need obtain a Credit Average through the BE degree course to be able to continue in the Co-operative Degree programme.

Students may apply to revert from the Co-operative Degree programme to the regular BE programme at any time.

Domestic students

Fees for Domestic students are based on individual unit selections. Please refer to the fees section of each unit description to work out an indicative annual cost.

Annual Tuition Fee is inclusive of the compulsory Student Services and Amenities (SSA) fee. The SSA fee for 2017 is $294 AUD.

International students

2017 Annual Tuition Fee (international students): $36,000 AUD*.
