The Bachelor of Media with Honours is a progressive, internationally recognised course of study that prepares you for a career in the dynamic media-related industries. Develop professional networks with fieldtrips, exchanges and internships through the School of Social Sciences partners in Tasmania, nationally and overseas.

Find yourself working on productions for the growing film, television and animation industries, in newsrooms, scientific or sports organisations, and with NGOs. Get international with fieldtrips, exchanges and internships – many fully funded – in Japan, Malaysia, Denmark, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.

The structure of the Bachelor of Media with Honours gives you the option to focus fully on media or to choose to complete an approved second major from across the University of Tasmania. Graduate from the degree with a portfolio of work completed through your major and 'Media Projects' production minor, media research and analytics, and international experience.

During your Honours year, you will have the opportunity to undertake a second internship at an advanced level and to complete an in-depth research or creative project relating to your area of specialisation or interest.

On completion of the Bachelor of Media with Honours, graduates will be able to:

  1. Critically analyse media texts, industries, and audiences from both theoretical and practical perspectives, showing advanced awareness of local, national, and international contexts.
  2. Demonstrate coherent and in-depth knowledge of key media studies concepts, approaches, and methods.
  3. Integrate and apply this knowledge to the production of media content and to workplace practice.
  4. Demonstrate advanced analytical, practical, technical, and research skills in one of the following areas: News and Journalism; Screen; Strategic Communications; or Media Practice and Analysis.
  5. Communicate effectively and ethically across a variety of media platforms, showing advanced abilities in a specific area of media production and/or the ability to communicate scholarly ideas in a meaningful and coherent way.
  6. Respond effectively and creatively to a changing media environment, demonstrating industry-level problem solving, creative thinking, and critical analysis skills.
  7. Demonstrate the capacity for independent scholarship and advanced critical reflection by undertaking a research project that makes original contributions to media research and/or media practice
Professional Practice and Industry Engagement

Professional Practice and Industry Engagement (studied at intermediate level) is compulsory in three of the four majors (News and Journalism; Screen; and Strategic Communications) and a prerequisite for Industry Placement.  Professional Practice and Industry Engagement will involve a work-integrated learning project. Students will work as part of a team, roleplaying as specialists within their chosen specialisation areas, to devise and deliver media and communications content, based on a client brief and/or industry scenario. In some cases, students may complete their creative communications project for a real-life client. In collaboration with an academic coordinator, industry mentors will guide students through the completion of their project, which may involve site visits, field trips, shadowing and client meetings. The unit will be taught through a combination of project work and intensive workshops.

Industry Placement and Industry Internship

Industry Placement (studied at advanced level) and Industry Internship (studied at honours level) are not compulsory. Entry to each unit is competitive, and is subject to approval by the unit coordinator and to the availability of work placements. In the units students will be assigned to a work placement that aligns with their chosen specialisation area. As part of their internship, students will, where opportunity allows, contribute to the production, publication and presentation of media content while working under the supervision of a qualified professional. The unit will be delivered through a combination of work placement and seminars that focus on peer reflection and career discussion.

Course structure

The Bachelor of Media with Honours will total 400cp (equivalent of 32x 12.5 CP units) comprising:

Years 1, 2 and 3

  • A reversed major of 8 units: 4 introductory, 2 intermediate, and 2 advanced units.  Students will choose one of four majors: News and Journalism; Screen; Strategic Communications; or Media Practice and Analysis. The student's chosen major will determine their "specialisation area" within the course, which also informs the focus of their Media Projects minor and work integrated learning units.
  • A Media Projects minor consisting of 4 units: 2 intermediate and 2 advanced units. This will enable students to work on a single media project or a variety of interrelated projects under academic supervision and with technical support. The final result will be rolled back across all Media Project units on completion of the Minor.
  • Degree Electives: 2 intermediate units;
  • Breadth units: 2 introductory units.
  • 8 student electives: 2 minimum-4 maximum introductory, 0 min-4 max intermediate, and 2 min-4 max advanced units.

Within the above students will need to ensure they meet the overall unit level requirement of:

  • Introductory level units (100 coded eg HEJ130): 8 minimum and 10 maximum
  • Intermediate level units (200 coded eg HEJ234): 6 minimum and 10 maximum
  • Advanced level units (300 coded eg HEJ350); 6 minimum and 10 maximum

Year 4

  • Progression to this final year is subject to students passing all year 1, 2-3 units and achieving a credit-average GPA in Year 2-3.
  • Students will complete 100cp of honours units.
  • Students who are not eligible to progress to year 4, will be exited out of F4G Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honours and will graduate with 13T Bachelor of Media.

The inclusion of a reversed major will create a united cohort in first year. The four compulsory first
year units will enable students to develop a variety of media production skills and foundational
knowledge in media studies that can then be applied in intermediate and advanced units within the
student's chosen specialisation area.

The offering of four specialist majors – which encompass the student's chosen major as well as the focus of their media production and professional practice units – enables close connections between all aspects of study in second and third year. Students will graduate with a comprehensive knowledge of and extensive experience in their chosen specialisation area. Practical work completed within the Media Projects minor will support and be closely connected to the student's chosen major. The four majors have been chosen because they represent distinct career options and because they are fields of study that are in high demand by students and employers, while also allowing in-depth and critical study of media in their historical and contemporary forms.

The inclusion of a Media Projects minor will enable students to develop practical skills and media
production abilities, with practice also functioning as a critical tool for media analysis. The work
produced within the minor will form part of a portfolio that students can take to prospective employers.  Students begin their minor in second year to ensure that they have gained foundational knowledge of media theory and practice in first year units before developing the more specialised media production skills that the minor involves. The decision to have the final result rolled back across all Media Projects units is informed by a need to encourage creativity, risk-taking, and critical reflection, and to allow for student-centred learning.

Students who have successfully passed all Year 1, 2 and 3 units (300cp) and who have achieved a credit-average GPA in their Year 2 and 3 units, can progress to Year 4.  Those who are ineligible to progress will be exited out of F4G Bachelor of Media with Honours and will graduate with 13T Bachelor of Media. 

Students who do not wish to progress to Year 4 despite being eligible, can email Arts.Faculty@utas.edu.au requesting to exit F4G BMedia with Honours and graduate with 13T BMedia.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           

During the fourth year, students will have the opportunity to undertake a second internship at an advanced level and to complete an in-depth research project on media and screen practices, industries and/or content. Creative practice can be a part of this research.

You may have also completed the Bachelor of General Studies (Arts Pathway) or University Preparation Program.

Transferring from the Bachelor of Arts

If you are currently studying the Journalism, Media and Communications specialisation (i.e. major) in the Bachelor of Arts degree program at the University you can either:

  • Apply to transfer into the Bachelor of Media with Honours and for advanced standing (credit points) for your previous study.
  • Continue the Journalism, Media and Communications major in the Bachelor of Arts under exactly the same conditions as you commenced.

Scholarships

Domestic Students

$5,000 Creative Arts Relocation Scholarships

Scholarships are available to domestic students who have an ATAR of 65+ (or equivalent alternate entry) and are relocating from interstate (outside Tasmania) to commence their Introductory (First) Year of the Bachelor of Media with Honours in Semester 1, 2017^.

Other Scholarships & Bursaries 

Each year, the University offers more than 900 awards to students from all walks of life, including those who have achieved high academic results; those from low socio-economic backgrounds; students with sporting ability; students undertaking overseas study; and students with a disability. Applications for most awards commencing in Semester 1 open at the beginning of August and close strictly on 31 October in the year prior to study.
