Location

From 2018, all new students will undertake their studies with a specialisation in TESOL, through the Graduate Certificate in Education (Specialisation) course.

This course enables teachers to extend and update their knowledge in the TESOL area. The Graduate Certificate in Education (TESOL) has international standing and is seen as a prestigious qualification for educators who wish to become leaders in TESOL.

The course has been designed to provide a comprehensive and contemporary examination of the most salient matters concerning English language learning and teaching. Course provision offers flexibility as a primary tenet, allowing participants to move between delivery modes to meet specific requirements. The MEd TESOL course is provided fully online, or on-campus in Launceston. Further flexibility is achieved through the design of assignments to meet the needs and requirements of individuals. Professional and academic scholarship is a high priority, and  participants are encouraged to engage in a scholarly approach within a community of learners.

Course Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge - Graduates will know and understand:

  • The theoretical foundations and practice of education (including various specialisations), and how these can facilitate enhanced pedagogical approaches, curriculum, policy, and student engagement from a global perspective;
  • The relationship between reflective practice and professional standards in local and/or global education contexts, and how each can define, validate and enhance learning and teaching;
  • The key research principles and methods applicable to extending knowledge in their specialised area of interest.

2. Skills - Graduates will:

  • Critically reflect on practice and/or research findings to develop new understandings that can inform sound professional judgment, planning and decision making;
  • Apply education theory to specific content and/or pedagogical knowledge to inform and advance learner outcomes and/or systemic developments within their own contexts;
  • Initiate constructive responses to changing educational contexts and learner needs.

3. Application of Knowledge and Skills - Graduates will:

  • Utilise educational theory and professional knowledge to design and evaluate programs in different learning and teaching contexts.
  • Independently utilise professional standards and contemporary scholarly literature to reflect on practice and facilitate positive educational change.
  • Plan and conduct independent inquiry to inform professional practice.

4. Communication, Collaboration and Leadership - Graduates will:

  • Communicate professionally and effectively across diverse settings and audiences;
  • Apply their knowledge and skills in collaborative practice and/or leadership roles.

5. Professional Learning - Graduates will:

  • Utilise contemporary literature and professional standards to improve practice and promote constructive and collegial learning in educational contexts;
  • Employ appropriate technologies to investigate and share practice with peers engaged in professional communities;
  • Be responsible and accountable for their own learning.

6. Ethical Professional Practice - Graduates will:

  • Conduct their practice and engage with stakeholders in an ethical, collaborative, professional and accountable manner;
  • Understand that, globally, educational professionalism requires ethical standards as well as evidence-based and exploratory approaches to teaching and learning.

Career outcomes

Graduates can expect to be employed in migrant education centres and as teachers of English in non-English speaking countries overseas.

Entry requirements

The University requires applicants for admission to the Graduate Certificate in Education (TESOL) degree to hold a Bachelor of Education or a degree in other discipline with a Diploma of Education, Bachelor of Teaching, or Master of Teaching, or to those holding equivalent qualifications.  Graduates without a teaching qualification but with extensive experience of teaching or training in TESOL can apply for admission to the course.

Full credit may be gained toward the Bachelor of Education with Professional Honours (TESOL) and Master of Education.

Fees & scholarships

Domestic students

Domestic students enrolled in a full fee paying place are charged the Student Services and Amenities Fee but this fee is incorporated in the fees you pay for each unit you enrol in. Full fee paying domestic students do not have to make any additional SSAF payments.

Domestic students enrolled in a Commonwealth supported place will be charged a fee based on the number of units a student enrols in. In 2018, this fee is $44.70 per unit. In 2018, the maximum charge for full time students is $298.

International students

International students are charged the Student Services and Amenities Fee but this fee is incorporated in the annual rate. International students do not have to make any additional SSAF payments.
