Foundations of English EMT511

Minimum enrolment number of 12 applies to this offering. Should enrolments not reach the minimum number required for on-campus study, students may be transferred to the on-line offering and advised of this change before semester commences.

Foundations of English is designed to provoke curiosity about how language works, ignite passions about English and introduce the beginnings of critical thinking about texts and their role in culture and society. This unit will introduce you to the foundations of English by covering the three strands of the Australian Curriculum English: Language, Literacy, and Literature, with a major focus on the Language strand. You will develop understandings of the nature and development of language and broaden your knowledge about functional approaches to written language. An emphasis of study will be on notions of socio-cultural contexts and their impact on the ways different text types or genres construct meanings; the manner in which texts vary with respect to field, tenor and mode, and the relationship of these three metafunctions of language. This unit will provide you with the foundation to the discipline of English.
