Introduction

This unit focuses on introductory skills and knowledge central to technical production for the theatre. It includes an introduction to the duties and skills required by technical support staff in theatre venues as well as the organisational skills appropriate to the preparation and execution of stage lighting, sound and mechanical departments. Students engage in the practice of safety procedures for responsible theatre operation

Teaching

Teaching Pattern

Workshops/Seminars/Site Visits are offered in intensive delivery mode.

Topics covered include:

Introduction to stage terminologies; OH&S and safety procedures; technical production procedures and responsibilities; introduction to lighting, sound and stage mechanics; risk assessment.

* 30 hours to take place over 4 full days in semester (actual days to be determined: indicative Thursday and Friday weeks 1/2)

During these four days students will spend two days on site at an external venue and two days at the Annexe Theatre, Inveresk. In addition to this an extra 9 hours will be completed at an individually negotiated time participating in either a bump in or a bump out on a production to be arranged by the unit coordinator.

Assessment

1.  The satisfactory completion of technical theatre induction(s) at Theatre North (Launceston) and Annexe Theatre (Inveresk) 30%

2. The satisfactory completion of a practical technical exercise in lighting, sound and stage mechanics 40%

(Mid Semester)3. The satisfactory participation and attendance at one Bump In or Bump Out (throughout the semester) 30%
