Imaging the Body FST214

Hobart

Note:

This unit is offered in even numbered years.

Introduction

Questions concerning the body and how it is imaged have become central to contemporary discussions about identity. This unit will analyse the various ways in which the body has been depicted in Western culture, examining the changing social and cultural meanings that have been invested in the body both in the past and in contemporary society. It will examine how factors such as gender and race have influenced the ways in which the body has been portrayed, as well as the impact of medical and digital technologies on our visualization of the body.
