Indigenous Life Histories HAB352

This unit engages with a broad range of Indigenous life writing, particularly from New South Wales, Tasmania, and Western Australia. Indigenous perspectives on topics as diverse as mission life, inner city ghettoes, the Redfern riot, cross-cultural liaisons, and the Government apology to the Stolen Generations will be compared and contrasted with archival and other documents on these aspects of Australian life. Some comparisons will be drawn with Indigenous life writing and experiences from cultures and societies in other parts of the world. This unit also canvasses several issues surrounding the production of texts by and about Indigenous people.
