Introduction
The unit HGW611 Direct Practice 2 consists of two parts: Working with individuals and families: builds on the professional communication skills and techniques taught in HGW517 and integrates them with an understanding how to respond to social suffering by undertaking psychosocial assessments and doing social casework. There is a focus on solutions and strengths focused approaches. Reference is made throughout the workshops to age, gender, cultural background and agency context, emphasising their relevance for practice. Ethical issues and the principles of social justice are addressed throughout. Group work: builds on group work theory taught in HGW517. Group work is used in this unit as a strategy for addressing social inclusion by social workers practising in culturally responsive and empowering ways. Students join a number of groups both as leaders and as participants and complete a detailed analysis of one group work session. Group work sessions are experiential and based on a range of topics relevant to socially inclusive practice in social work.

Learning Outcomes
- explain and demonstrate your understanding of how, in the context of experiences of social suffering, social workers use interpersonal helping to support change in micro, meso and macro contexts.
- establish empathetic, respectful and empowering helping relationships in all of your efforts to achieve meaningful change for the people that you work with.
- plan, assess, implement and evaluate interviewing and group work interventions based on the principles and practices of the solutions and strengths based models of practice that also integrate other relevant social work knowledge, values and skills.
- critically reflect on your practice as a means of: demonstrating and developing a reflexive awareness of your use of self in the helping process and its impact on the change process' appraising the political and ethical implications of your practice by reviewing the effects of your use of power and what happens as a result of the contexts you emphasise or de-emphasise in your practice.
- integrate the ethical standards that are described in the aasw code of ethics (2010) into all aspects of your practice.
- use advanced communication skills.
