Based on the premise that 'food' is more than simply fuel for human sustenance, this unit examines foods of Asia and reveals the connections between food, eating and cooking practices on the one hand and demographic trends, gender roles, religious beliefs, ritual, social tensions and colonial conquest on the other. The representation of food in the visual and performing arts and in literature in Asia will also be examined.
