Political and Cultural History of Taiwan HMC225

This unit is being phased out, no new enrolments are being taken.

The island of Taiwan has a complex history as a Dutch colonial outpost, a far Eastern frontier of the Qing dynasty, a colony of Japan and then the refuge of Nationalist China and a "renegade province" of the People's Republic of China. Taiwan has also been one of the four Asian tigers of little dragons, with an historically unprecedented economic boom from the 1950s, and democratic reform from the late 1980s. This unit explores the cultural, political and social history of Taiwan and through it examines the boundaries of Chinese Studies as well as notions of transnationalism and globalization.
