Classical Chinese A HMC314

Hobart, Launceston

This elective unit complements (but is not a prerequisite for) HMC315 Classical Chinese B.

Available subject to sufficient enrolments.

This unit has a twofold focus: literature and culture. The literature part focuses on reading, interpreting and understanding sample writings from original classical Chinese texts, ranging from Shi Jing (Book of Songs) to Tang/Song Poetry, and also including material regarding the three streams of Chinese classical thought: Confucianism, Daoism and Legalism. The culture elements encourage students to develop the skills necessary to analyze how the history, politics and economy of imperial China have influenced the country in the modern era and had an effect on contemporary practices and events.By translating traditional Chinese texts to modern Chinese or English, students will build the knowledge foundation necessary to investigate the differences between Chinese and western worldviews.
