Classical Chinese B HMC315

Hobart, Launceston

Available subject to sufficient enrolments

This unit has twofold focuses: Literature and Culture. The literature part focuses on reading, interpreting and understanding sample writings of original classical Chinese texts, from Shi Ji to Dream of the Red Chamber, and some selected texts regarding traditional Chinese operas are also included in. The culture part highlights the ability of students to analyze how the history, politics and economy of imperial China have influenced the country and affect contemporary practices and events.Students will be introduced to a range of texts from classical Chinese literature and they will be required to translate texts from traditional Chinese to modern Chinese or English. Hopefully all of these would be able to establish a foundation for investigating the differences between Chinese and western worldviews.
