Hobart, Launceston

Note:

A student who has previously undertaken HTA211Europe at War 1914-1945 or HTA311 Europe at War 1914-1945 cannot undertake the new unit HTA211/311 Europe under the Dictators 1914-1945.

Introduction

From the First World War to the fall of Nazi Germany in 1945, this unit explores European history in the tumultuous period 1914-1945. This was an age convulsed by total war, nationalism, revolution, totalitarianism, political violence and genocide. Democracy increasingly battled for its survival against the new challenges of fascism and communism. The unit has a strong focus on the nature of the interwar dictatorships that arose in Russia and Germany, which were to become the epicentre of this age of barbarism. Topics include the legacy of the Great War, Lenin and the Russian Revolution, fascism and Nazi Germany, Stalinist Russia, the Spanish Civil War, the Second World War, collaboration and resistance, and the Holocaust
