This course is designed to enhance the professional skills of health and human service professionals, clinical leaders, managers and policy/planning practitioners working, or aspiring to work, in leadership or management positions within the broad health and human service sectors in Australia and internationally.

Graduates will develop in-depth contemporary knowledge of health and human service systems across a range of leadership and management dimensions including system planning, policy, strategy, governance, risk management, legal issues, ethics, health economics, financial management, quality & safety, leading & managing change, professional supervision, epidemiology, evaluating data/ evidence and translating evidence into practice.

At Masters level the course consists mainly of supervised work-based research projects. The course is able to be completed entirely via distance study methods but can be supported with optional mixed method delivery in some components of study at Hobart, Launceston, Burnie and Rozelle campuses particularly through short course intensives.

  • 1 Develop, critically appraise and demonstrate in-depth contemporary knowledge of effective health & human services leadership and management in professional practice.
  • 2 Lead the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of interventions and services to improve access and quality and safety in health & human service delivery, in local, national and international contexts.
  • 3 Communicate innovative and insightful leadership responses to complex health and human services problems with a range of audiences in the context of professional practice.
  • 4 Apply advanced leadership & management competencies in reflective professional practice, including expert judgement, self-management and ethical practice
  • 5 Plan, conduct and manage high quality, ethical health & human services evaluation and research relevant to system change, policy development and personal professional practice, drawing upon in-depth knowledge of research principles and methods.

    In year 3 you will select from three pathways. To select the Professional Practice Pathway you must have previously completed one of the following UTAS courses: M4V Bachelor of Healthcare with Professional Honours, M6S Graduate Diploma of Leadership (Health and Human Services), M6Z Graduate Diploma of Healthcare Redesign.

    Applicants with higher education study
    Completed undergraduate degree at AQF7 level from an Australian higher education provider in a health or human welfare studies and services field, or equivalent overseas qualification 

    or
    Completed undergraduate degree at AQF7 level from an Australian higher education provider in any discipline (or equivalent overseas qualification) and at least five years relevant professional and/or industry experience in a health or human welfare studies and services field.

    This course is not available to international students. Please enquire online for advice on alternative course options.

    Students who complete the Graduate Certificate in Leadership (Health and Human Services) or Graduate Diploma of Leadership (Health and Human Services) can articulate into the Master of Leadership (Health and Human Services). The Graduate Certificate in Leadership (Health and Human Services) or Graduate Diploma of Leadership (Health and Human Services) are exit awards for the Master of Leadership (Health and Human Services).

    Options for this course

    Cost shouldn’t get in the way of you studying.

    If you’re a domestic postgraduate student, you might be eligible for a Commonwealth supported place in this course. This means your fees will be subsidised by the Australian Government. You’ll only need to pay the student contribution amount for each unit you study within the course.

    You may also be able to defer payment of the student contribution amount by accessing a HECS-HELP loan from the Government. If eligible, you’ll only have to pay your tuition fees once you start earning above a specific amount.

    An important note on Youth Allowance and Austudy

    The Department of Social Services has approved some accredited and professionally-oriented Master courses for student payments through Youth Allowance or Austudy. This means if you enrol in one of these courses, you may be eligible for student payments. However, please be aware that this is not the case for all Master courses.
