Complexities During and After Birth CNA623

0.5 FTE per fortnight of clinical practice in a health care agency for 20 weeks

Introduction

This unit provides you with the opportunity to examine the midwife's responsibility to provide safe care during complex labour, birth and the postpartum period. The unit builds upon CNA689 in that it considers at-risk and complex situations which may endanger maternal, fetal and neonatal health. Emphasis is on working with women holistically in complex situations, developing appropriate referral skills, and working collaboratively with other members of the health care team to enhance the outcomes for the woman and her family.

This unit is one of six units that make up the Graduate Diploma of Midwifery and contributes to the development of knowledge, skills and attitudes/attributes required for competent beginning level midwifery practice. By the completion of the course you are required to demonstrate the acquisition of the NMBA Midwifery Standards for Practice 2018, and the ANMAC Midwifery Accreditation Standards (pending).

Learning Outcomes

  • Apply sociological, pathophysiological and psychological theory to the care of a woman, neonate and her significant others during complex childbirth, and puerperium, in a way that respects the diverse experiences and expectations of each woman and her family.
  • Identify deviations from normal during childbirth and puerperium, and consult, refer and collaborate with other healthcare professionals and initiate appropriate action in an obstetric emergency.
  • Initiate strategies that ensure women experiencing complex childbirth and puerperium remain central to decision- making about the health and wellbeing of themselves and their unborn infants.
  • Apply theory to perform professional capabilities and accountabilities in practice, in the context of complex childbirth and puerperium, as defined by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) Midwifery Standards for Practice (2018).
