Course rules for J5E Graduate Certificate in Applied Science (Specialisation)

Entry

1. Candidates for the Graduate Certificate in Applied Science (Specialisation): Students will be able to enter the program:

  • via a Bachelor Degree or equivalent in an area of maritime operations, engineering or technology 4;

via an Advanced Diploma or equivalent in an area of maritime operations related study together with extensive relevant work experience;

  • via the following seafaring Certificate of Competency with relevant maritime experience: o Master (STCW Reg II/2) o Chief Mate (STCW Reg II/2) o Engineer Class 1 (STCW Reg III/2) o Engineer Class 2 (STCW Reg III/2)

  • on the basis of extensive relevant work experience and a potential to undertake work at this level as demonstrated through Recognition of Prior Learning processes in accordance with the AMC procedure 'Credit for Prior learning' and approved by the Director (NCPS)

  • Students will be able to enter the Graduate Diploma in Applied Science (Specialisation) following completion of the Graduate Certificate or a similar and equivalent award from another tertiary institution.Students will be able to enter the Masters of Applied Science (Specialisation) following completion of the Graduate Diploma or a similar and equivalent award from another tertiary institution.

2. Candidates for the award of Graduate Certificate in Applied Science (Specialisation) shall complete the award requirements, as hereinafter prescribed, in not less than 0.5 years of full‐time study (or its equivalent) and not more than 2 years from the time of first enrolment in the Graduate Certificate.

Candidates for the award of Graduate Diploma in Applied Science (Specialisation) shall complete the award requirements, as hereinafter prescribed, in not less than 0.5 years of full‐time study (or its equivalent) and not more than 2 years from the time of first enrolment at the Graduate Diploma level.

Candidates for the award of Master of Applied Science (Specialisation) shall complete the award requirements, as hereinafter prescribed, in not less than 0.5 years of full‐time study (or its equivalent) and not more than 2 years from the time of first enrolment at the Master's degree level.

Course Structure

3. To qualify for the award of Graduate Certificate in in Applied Science (Specialisation), the candidate shall pass 4 units comprising:

(a) 2 compulsory core units as outlined in Schedule A parts I ‐ IV.

(b) 2 elective units as outlined in Schedule A parts I ‐ IV.

To qualify for the award of Graduate Diploma in Applied Science (specialisation), the candidate shall pass an additional 4 units comprising: (

a) 2 compulsory core units as outlined in Schedule A parts I‐IV.

(b) 2 elective units as outlined in Schedule A parts I ‐ IV.

To qualify for the award of Master of Maritime Studies 2 units comprising:

(a) 2 additional units comprising a dissertation as outlined in Schedule A parts I ‐ IV.

4. The units which may be included in a course for the award shall, unless otherwise approved by the Principal of AMC or delegate, be in accordance with Schedule A parts I‐IV accompanying these specifications.

5. Units may be counted towards the award only if they have been taken in accordance with prerequisites determined by AMC and as summarised in Schedule A parts I‐IV.

6. A candidate normally may not enrol in any semester in units totalling more than 50% weighting (4 units), or if the candidate is in full‐time employment during any given Semester, more than 25% (2 units) weighting.

7. Where two or more units of the same name or content are offered within the University, only one may be counted towards the degree.

8. In every case the candidate's choice of units and the order in which they are taken shall be subject to the requirements of paragraph 3.

Credit for Previous Studies

9. Passes in subjects or units in other courses (completed or otherwise) in this University or another approved tertiary institution (or other approved professional examining body) may be credited towards the award, provided that the Australian Maritime College may specify what more a candidate so credited shall be required to do to qualify for the award.

Miscellaneous

10. The Australian Maritime College may from time to time make amendments to the Schedules to these specifications.

11. These specifications shall take effect on 1 January 2013 and shall apply to all candidates for the award, including those enrolling for the first time in that year and those enrolled subsequently.

12. The approved abbreviation for the awards of Graduate Certificate in Applied Science (Specialisation) shall be:

    GradCertAppSc(MarSafe) The approved abbreviation for the awards of Graduate Diploma in Applied Science (Specialisation) shall be:

    GradDipAppSc(MarSafe) The approved abbreviation for the awards of Master of Applied Science (Specialisation) shall be:
