Duration

Duration refers to the minimum and maximum amounts of time in which this course can be completed. It will be affected by whether you choose to study full or part time, noting that some programs are only available part time.

Location

This course may not be available to international students. Please see the list of distance courses (i.e. online and taken outside Australia) that are offered to international students

There is no new intake into this degree from 2014. This degree is in teach-out. Interested applicants should look at the Associate Degree in Information and Communication Technology.

The Associate Degree in Computing is a 2-year award which provides a solid foundation to the disciplines of Computing and Computer Science. Students complete 16 units with at least 10 relating specifically to IT. Some foundation units are allowed to better prepare students for bachelors degree study.

The associate degree articulates to the Bachelor of Computing; with appropriate unit choices, the Bachelor of Computing degree may be completed after one additional full-time year.

Course structure

To qualify for the Associate Degree in Computing, students must successfully complete 200% in three stages as follows:

Foundation Level Units (loosely described as 'pre-bachelors degree units') - students select 0-50% from a list which includes:

KRA001 Chemistry Foundations (12.5%)

KPZ005 Life Sciences Foundations (12.5%)

KMA003 Mathematics Foundations (12.5%)

KYA004 Physics Foundations (12.5%)

KIT001 Programming Preparation(12.5%)

ESH100 Thinking and Writing at University (12.5%)

HPA001 Foundations of Critical Thinking (12.5%)

The Faculty may look to expand on the preparatory units that are available, for example, a writing/literacy unit may be introduced in future. Other units offered by partner institutions may be approved as Foundation Level Units on a case-by-case basis.

A minimum of 125% units of which 50% must be from Schedule A, 25% must be from Schedule B, and 50% from Schedule C.

25%-75% of units from anywhere in the University, up to 50% in place of Foundation Level Units.

Entry requirements

The program offers an alternative method of entry for applicants who do not meet the standard admission requirements. It prepares students for entry to degrees in science and engineering offered at the University of Tasmania. Specific units from the foundation component of the Associate Degree (Stage 1) may taken by students seeking admission to degree programs with specific admission pre-requisites.

Domestic students

Fees for Domestic students are based on individual unit selections. Please refer to the fees section of each unit description to work out an indicative annual cost.

Annual Tuition Fee is inclusive of the compulsory Student Services and Amenities (SSA) fee. The SSA fee for 2017 is $294 AUD.

International students

International students should refer to the International Students course fees page to get an indicative course cost.
