Marine Propulsion Systems JEE500

Introduction

This unit equips students with an understanding of the design features, operation and operational characteristics of the prime movers used on board a variety of vessels. Students apply this knowledge to obtaining effective engineering design solutions for marine propulsion systems, so that they can meet their functional purposes within national and international statutory and regulatory frameworks.

Learning Outcomes

  • Compare the design features and analyse the practical constraints of marine propulsion sub systems.
  • Determine primary and secondary balance forces and critical torsional vibration frequencies of diesel engine propulsion systems.
  • Investigate and appraise current developments in marine propulsion systems and components.
  • Analyse and select propulsors, such as Wageningen B series propellers or water jets, to match vessel hull thrust requirements.
  • Select ship’s propulsion systems, with due consideration to classification and statutory regulations.
