Introduction

The unit is directed at building on the fundamentals of digital electronics engineering acquired in the second year of the course to provide technical competence in digital electronic systems, particularly in the design of microprocessor based systems.

Topics include: The operation of microprocessors and micro-controllers, Development of assembler language techniques, Instruction set design, Microprocessor architecture and design, in particular operation of: single cycle, multi cycle and pipeline data path microprocessors, Data path design and implementation, Memory system design including cache systems, Input/output systems, Interrupts and exceptions, Performance analysis.
