Stress Analysis KNE722

Hobart

Introduction

The unit covers fundamental concepts, principles, and methods of stress analysis, including elastic stress analysis of two- and three-dimensional bodies, Airy and Saint Venant stress function formulations and specific solutions in rectangular and polar coordinates, axisymmetric stresses in rotating bodies, stress concentrations, introduction to finite element analysis, torsion of various cross section types with and without warping restraint, behaviour of laterally loaded plates and simple shells, stresses in pipes and cylinders, and an introduction to isotropic, orthotropic and composite materials.

The unit augments the fundamentals of the elastic behaviour of solid bodies acquired earlier in the course, laying also foundations for computer methods of analysis of stresses in solid bodies. It emphasizes understanding of principles involved and their application to practical situations.
