The Master of Research qualifies individuals who apply an advanced body of knowledge in a range of contexts for research and scholarships and as a pathway for further research.

A Master of Research enables individuals to expand their breadth of knowledge and expertise in their chosen discipline.

The Degree provides candidates with advanced skills to carry out independent and sustained research.  Candidates will be able to demonstrate specialist knowledge in the area of their research, present the results of their research in a publishable quality and demonstrate an understanding of, and commitment to, research ethics and codes of practice.

Areas of particular research expertise within the Faculty include: haematology, microbiology, nutrition and molecular biology to investigate an aspect of health and/or disease.

At the University of Tasmania candidates are encouraged to demonstrate academic leadership, increasing independence, creativity and innovation in their research and encouraged in the acquisition of a wide range of advanced and transferable skills.

Graduates will fulfil the skill requirements in the Australian Qualification Framework for this degree and the University of Tasmania expects all graduates of a Master of Research to meet its Generic Attributes .

Graduates of a Masters Degree (Research) will have:

  • cognitive skills to demonstrate mastery of theoretical knowledge and to reflect critically on theory and its application
  • cognitive, technical and creative skills to investigate, analyse and synthesise complex information, problems, concepts and theories and to apply established theories to different bodies of knowledge or practice
  • cognitive, technical and creative skills to generate and evaluate complex ideas and concepts at an abstract level
  • cognitive and technical skills to design, use and evaluate research and research methods
  • communication and technical skills to present a coherent and sustained argument and to disseminate research results to specialist and non-specialist audiences
  • technical and communication skills to design, evaluate, implement, analyse, theorise and disseminate research that makes a contribution to knowledge

Knowledge

Graduates of a Masters (Research) will be able to:

  • use specialised knowledge and skills for research, and/or professional practice and/or further learning;
  • demonstrate an advanced and integrated understanding of a complex body of knowledge in one or more disciplines or areas of practice; and
  • demonstrate a detailed understanding of applicable techniques for research and advanced academic enquiry.

Skills

Graduates of a Masters (Research) will be independent researchers able to:

  • demonstrate mastery of theoretical knowledge and to reflect critically on theory and its applications;
  • investigate, analyse and synthesise complex information, problems, concepts and theories and to apply established theories to different bodies of knowledge or practice;
  • generate and evaluate complex ideas and concepts at an abstract level;
  • design, use and evaluate research and research methods;
  • communicate orally and in written form to present a coherent and sustained argument and to disseminate research results to specialist and non-specialist audiences; and
  • design, evaluate, implement, analyse, theorise and disseminate research that makes a contribution to knowledge

Application of Knowledge

Graduates of a Masters (Research) Degree will have the knowledge and skills to be able to:

  • plan and execute a substantial piece of research using creativity, initiative, expert judgement, adaptability and responsibility as a practitioner or scholar.
  • understand and apply the social and ethical implications of research and appropriate professional behaviour consistent with the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research and other relevant guidelines.

Career outcomes

Master of Research degrees are internationally recognised research degrees.

The Master of Research is a demonstration of a graduate's ability to initiate a research project and to formulate viable research questions, to design, conduct and report independent and original research on a defined project and to demonstrate critical evaluation of scholarly literature.

As a result, Master of Research graduates have the opportunity to pursue diverse career paths, including professions in research and academia, as well as a broad spectrum of professions in the public and private sector, including public and private pathology laboratories, research institutes and quality assurance agencies.

Course structure

A Master of Research is a course of supervised research and professional development conducted over 1-2 years (full-time) or 2-4 years (part-time), culminating in the examination of a thesis or creative equivalent, by at least two external examiners.

Master of Research Candidature is structured around a series of milestones:

  1. Draft Research Plan submitted at 3 months equivalent full time enrolment
  2. Confirmation of Candidature by 12 months equivalent full time enrolment
  3. Thesis or creative equivalent submission for examination no later than 24 months equivalent full time enrolment

Master of Research Candidates are concurrently enrolled in a Graduate Certificate in Research designed to provide you with a range of training activities and career development opportunities that assist in developing high-level research, communication and management skills. The skills obtained will give you an edge with future employment opportunities.

The University also offers candidate opportunities to engage in research seminars, present at conferences and participate in skill development workshops.

The campus of study will vary depending on the location of the candidate, the supervisor and the research field.

Entry requirements

Applicants should apply after finding a potential supervisor and discussing and agreeing on their proposed topic. Applicants will be considered who have:

  • an honour's degree with at least second class lower standard; or
  • a masters degree with a minimum research component (e.g., a thesis); or
  • substantial demonstrated sector experience, previous higher education studies and professional experience and/or published research work.

International applicants must also meet the University's English language requirements for admission.

Fees & scholarships

Domestic students

Domestic students will be provided with a Research Training Program (RTP) Fees Offset scholarship of AUD $22,000- $33,000. This scholarship is provided to individual students to offset their tuition fees.

These funds are provided by the Commonwealth Government as a contribution to the University towards the direct costs of a student’s research training (supervision, access to resources or facilities at the University, costs associated with fieldwork, training in techniques and necessary coursework undertaken outside the School/Institute).

International students

2019 Total Course Fee (international students): $0 AUD*.

Course cost based on a rate of $34,155 AUD per standard, full-time year of study (100 credit points).

Scholarships

All candidates must pay a Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF), which we use to improve student services.  This cost is included in international tuition fees, however domestic candidates are charged separately.
