UTASAccess – Direct Entry provides a pathway to the University of Tasmania and is designed to help you acquire the necessary English level to succeed in your chosen degree. You can satisfy the English requirement for University of Tasmania degrees with this program without the need for further internationally recognised exam results such as IELTS or TOEFL.

Location: Hobart or Launceston (note: the campus where you study English will be the same as the location of your degree).

Duration: 5-40 weeks (note: the time you spend in this program will depend on your English entry level and how quickly you reach the required level for your chosen degree).

Levels: From Pre-intermediate to Advanced

UTASAccess – Maritime English Direct Entry (Launceston campus only) For students intending to study at the Australian Maritime College, the customised UTASAccess – Maritime English Direct Entry course provides the same program with additional Maritime English learning resources included. Apart from choosing this course when completing your application, the exact same conditions, fees and requirements apply.

Course structure

UTASAccess – Direct Entry is a 7-level course with commencement level depending on your English ability on arrival. If you have recently completed an internationally-recognised exam (such as IELTS, TOEFL or PTE) you can estimate the likely required length of your course (see Entry requirements below). If you haven't got such a recognised exam result, you may be requested to do our Placement Test on-arrival.

The course provides 20 hours per week of intensive in-class English language tuition for pre-intermediate to advanced learners. Within the course structure lies rigorous academic content to help you gain the necessary skills to undertake degree studies at the University of Tasmania.

Students must also access additional learning support through our online learning environment (MyLO).

Levels 4-7 focus on academic skills at an Upper-intermediate to Advanced level. Levels 1-3 focus on General English skills at the pre-intermediate to intermediate level. As mentioned, your commencement Level is indicated by our placement test or any internationally-recognised test results you've supplied on application or arrival.

Within the higher UTASAccess Levels, we build academic English ability and confidence through focus on:

  • Use of academic conventions
  • Construction of essays/reports & retrieval and citation of relevant sources
  • Management of University workloads
  • Listening and reading skills
  • Reflective writing
  • Preparations and presentation of research assignments
  • Academic and general language foundations

Each UTASAccess level comprises a 5-week module and progress to successive levels is based on achievement via testing. Students progress until the successful completion of the relevant UTASAccess Level required for entry into their chosen University of Tasmania course. While many students progress to their goal smoothly, it's important to note you may need to repeat one or more levels. Allowing time for an additional 5 week module before commencement of your intended degree course is recommended.

While English language requirements differ, as a very general rule Level 6 is required for undergraduate and Level 7 for postgraduate courses. It's very important to check the English requirements for your intended tertiary studies. It is the responsibility of individual students to ensure awareness of the admission requirements for entry into intended courses of study.

Assessment

Students are assessed on their academic language, research and study skills across the following areas:

  • Academic writing
  • Academic speaking
  • Listening/note-taking
  • Reading strategies and comprehension
  • Use of English

In Levels 1-5, students require an overall minimum score of 60% with no skill below 50% to progress. In Level 6, an overall minimum score of 60% with no skill below 55% is required. Success at Level 7 varies depending on the English entry requirement for your intended degree. Note both English and academic requirements apply for university course entry.
