The Bachelor of General Studies - Foundation Year Pathway is the first year of the Bachelor of General Studies and is designed as an alternative entry pathway to university study. In the foundation year, students study units which provide the skills and knowledge related to their intended degree and are provided with additional support to maximise their chances of success. Completion of the foundation year will provide achievement at Introductory level in two units. Students who successfully complete the foundation year of the Bachelor of General Studies exit with a Diploma of University Studies.

Pathways currently offered in the Bachelor of General Studies are Arts, Education, Business, Science, Engineering, ICT, Health and Health Science.

University College is currently reviewing the foundation year courses to best meet the needs of students. As such, it is likely that as of 2018 this course will be offered as a Diploma of University Studies. More information about this change will be provided to students as it becomes available. In the meantime, students are still able to apply for and enrol in the Bachelor of General Studies (Pathway).

Students who successfully complete the Bachelor of General Studies (ICT Pathway) are guaranteed entry to the Bachelor of Information and Communication Technology, and will be eligible for credit for completed Introductory units.

Career outcomes

The Bachelor of General Studies (ICT Pathway) is an alternative entrance program for the Bachelor of ICT, and as such, is not a stand-alone qualification with career outcomes.

Entry requirements

The Bachelor of General Studies Pathways are designed for applicants who do not meet general entry requirements for their chosen UTAS degree or for those who want a more supported or graded introduction to their studies. This may include mature-aged students returning to study, students without pre-requisites for their preferred course, some VET graduates or students with a low ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank) score from their year 11/12 studies. Entry will be granted by assessment of a student's prior study history and supporting statement, literacy and numeracy assessment and/or personal interview.

Students interested in another undergraduate degree but unsure of their eligibility should submit an applicationfor that degree course in the first instance. If you are not eligible you may be offered a place in the Bachelor of General Studies. Students with insufficient IT skills may be required to enrol in an additional enabling-level unit (UPP055 Using Technology).

Students should meet minimum requirements in reading, writing and numeracy in alignment with the UTAS Pre-degree framework:

  • Minimum level English Language proficiency Australian Core Skills Framework
  • Reading Level 4.03 (all aspects)
  • Writing Level 3.06 (all aspects)
  • Oral Communication Level 4 (all aspects)
  • Numeracy Level 3 (all aspects)
  • NESB Test Level C+ or Min IELTS 5.5

Please note: this course is not available to international students.

Students undertaking preparatory study in the University Preparation Program may be eligible for credit into the Bachelor of General Studies foundation year for any successfully completed equivalent units.

Students who successfully complete the ICT Pathway will automatically qualify (with credit) for entry into a Bachelor of Information and Communication Technology.

Fees & scholarships

Domestic students

Fees for Domestic students are based on individual unit selections. Please refer to the fees section of each unit description to work out an indicative annual cost.

Annual Tuition Fee is inclusive of the compulsory Student Services and Amenities (SSA) fee. The SSA fee for 2017 is $294 AUD.

International students

International students should refer to the International Students course fees page to get an indicative course cost.
