Industry experts are also actively involved in the development of the Associate Degree in Applied Science and the teaching of subjects.
The Associate Degree in Applied Science is an industry-focused program designed for people interested in working in fields that require specialised skills and knowledge of applied science principles and processes – including those who may never have considered a career in ‘science’.

The specialisations available under this course are:

  • Fermentation Science and Separation Processes (please note that Term 3 commencement is available part time only)
  • Aquaculture

The Fermentation Science and Separation Processes specialisation has been developed for people interested in working in innovative biotechnology industries such as brewing, winemaking, fermented food and drink production and plant-based cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. The Fermentation Science and Separation Processes specialisation will provide students the opportunity to learn about Tasmania’s innovative industries within the food and beverage (beer, cider, wine, whiskey, gin, cheese and other fermented foods) and premium bio-industries (essential oils, seaweed based fertilisers, poppies, pyrethrum and biodiesel). Specialisation subjects such as applied microbiology, applied chemistry and applied biology are integrated with core subjects such as applied maths, quality management, sustainability and technology & innovation. In the second year, students may choose additional elective subjects depending on their areas of interest.

The Aquaculture specialisation is aimed at people who wish to work in the aquaculture industry in Tasmania and mainland Australia. The course was developed in response to industry demand as the aquaculture industry is currently in a high growth phase. Aquaculture subjects are integrated with core subjects in applied science such as applied maths, quality management, sustainability and technology & innovation. In the second year, students may choose additional elective subjects depending on their areas of interest.  Aquaculture is the fastest growing primary industry in Tasmania.   The Associate Degree in Applied Science Aquaculture is relevant to all aspects of the Tasmanian industry, including salmon, trout, oysters, mussels and abalone. The Tasmanian aquaculture industry is a world leader in quality, innovation and technology. Currently, an estimated 2,595 Full Time Equivalent (FTE’s) are employed in the Tasmanian aquaculture sector (inclusive of salmon id processing) (*Seafood Industry Workforce Profile, May 2017.  Tasmanian Seafood Industry Council).

A key feature of the course is the practical component, where 16 ‘Practice and Portfolio’ subjects are paired with 16 academic subjects to provide hands-on learning. This unique system aims to enhance students’ problem solving, communication, critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership skills by allowing them to ‘learn through practice’. It has been designed to make university study a little less daunting—and a lot more practical.

Industry experts have helped to develop the course and are actively involved in the delivery through teaching, site visits, case studies and work placements. As a result, graduates will be considered ‘workplace ready’ after two years of (full time) study.

The program is available for full-time and part-time study across all campuses in Tasmania and is delivered through a combination of online study, face-to-face classes, practical workshops and tutorials.

Graduates of the Associate Degree in Applied Science will have:

  • a pathway to a great career in aquaculture or applied biotechnology
  • opportunities to progress within their chosen field
  • practical skills to take straight into the workplace
  • the opportunity to undertake further study at the University of Tasmania.

The course structure

The Associate Degree in Applied Science is structured over two years full-time (or equivalent part-time), based on four teaching terms of 10 weeks. The associate degree comprises study in 16 different topic areas, each with a practical/hands-on learning component, making a total of:

  • 16 discipline subjects
  • 16 practice and portfolio subjects

On completion of the Associate Degree in Applied Science, graduates will be able to:

Work Integrated Learning 

The Work Integrated Learning (WIL) components of the Associate Degree in Applied Science focus specifically on developing students’ employability skills by exposing them to real-world industry case studies and taking a problem-based learning approach to reiterate discipline learning. Work placement will allow students to gain direct experience in a work environment.

Practice and Portfolio (P&P)

Portfolio development and hands-on learning are a key component of the Associate Degree in Applied Science (Specialisation). The Practice and Portfolio (P&P) components of this program introduce the concept of learning through practice, by exposing students to authentic and engaged learning experiences designed to develop their understanding of work and the workplace. Throughout the P&P subjects, students learn to critically reflect on their progress towards meeting personal career development goals.

All P&P subjects are delivered as a companion to a discipline subject. As such, discipline subjects cannot be taken as standalone subjects- it must be done with a corresponding P&P subject. The P&P subjects add value to the discipline subjects by enhancing student’s learning experience through developing students’ core skills and knowledge in problem solving, communication, critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership- crucial employability skills, and by relating these skills back to the discipline content. Students are introduced to the concept of ‘learning through practice’ in order to develop their understanding of work and the workplace from their first learning experience in Term 1.

All students will be required to demonstrate evidence of application and reflection within defined parameters of para-professional work and practice. Across all P&P subjects, assessment tasks are embedded in the discipline subject assessments and are cumulative and informed by increasing knowledge drawn from the subject.

These P&P units are designed so that the student and Student Portfolio Coach can build a picture of student strengths and weaknesses and thus be guided accordingly. Each P&P subject will be based on a method or approach to practice.

The types of P&P approaches that a student can expect to undertake during the two-year degree are:

  • Projects;
  • Data for decision making;
  • Field work;
  • Case Studies;
  • Action learning cycles;
  • Design and creative thinking;
  • Simulated environments design;
  • Work placements;
  • Internships; and
  • Wicked problem (an issue highly resistant to resolution)/ entrepreneurship).

Graduation from the Associate Degree in Applied Science can provide an entry opportunity for those who have not worked in science; accelerate progression through a graduate’s present organisation; or open up new career pathways and opportunities.

Opportunities for students specialising in Applied Science (Fermentation science and separation processes) include brewing, wine making, fermented food and drink product manufacture, distillation, alkaloids, biodiesel, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, forensics, essential oils and water treatment.

Opportunities for students specialising in aquaculture include working as technicians and managers on aquaculture farms, hatcheries and nurseries; for companies providing consultancy, advisory, sales and other services; and for government, research agencies and not-for-profit organisations involved in industry regulation.

Extend your study into a Bachelor degree

Students wishing to articulate into the University of Tasmania’s Bachelor of Applied Science (top up) course will receive full credit (subject to chosen specialisation in the Associate Degree and degree). Students wishing to articulate from the Associate Degree in Applied Science into another bachelor course will gain credit subject to the receiving Faculty's discretion.

Course structure

The Associate Degree in Applied Science is a two-year full-time (or equivalent part-time) course requiring the successful completion of 32 subjects comprising of a combination of 16 topic areas, each with an embedded hands-on learning component. The program is offered over four teaching terms of 10 weeks.

The Associate Degree in Applied Science requires students to develop knowledge and skills through a learning approach based on work integrated learning opportunities such as industry placements, fieldwork, case studies and applied research. This leads the program to be structured around the concept of paired or companion subjects where a Discipline subject and a Practice and Portfolio (P&P) subject are linked such that students are given the opportunity to apply discipline knowledge in a work based type setting.

At the end of the second year, students will have the opportunity to:

- commence employment or enhance their current employment as skilled para-professionals (diploma -associate degree);

- and/or continue study in preparation for future employment which subsequently prepares individuals to transition into leadership and management roles as highly skilled professionals (bachelor – bachelor honours top up degree).

The Associate Degree in Applied Science is offered in blended mode, where students receive access to comprehensive learning materials and a Lecturer for each subject of study. There is a workshop component where students attend campus to practice their skills and also online sessions where students can integrate theory and practice.

Entry requirements

The Associate Degree in Applied Science is open to applicants from a broad range of backgrounds. You can gain admission to the Associate Degree in Applied Science in three ways. These are:

  1. College entry;
  2. Alternative entry; or
  3. General entry.

If you've just finished school, the following will apply to you:

College entry – a minimum level of study undertaken in Year 11 and 12 at Level 2 or above. This includes Satisfactory Achievements (SA) in English and Mathematics, and SA results in three other Level 2 subjects at Year 11 and 12 standard, with awards spread across both years; or

General entry – meet the broader general entry requirements for the University, which are SA results in at least four Tasmanian Qualifications Authority (TQA) level 3 accredited courses or a Year 11/12 ATAR.

For applicants with Year 11 and 12 College results or University academic records, UTAS will attempt to access these transcripts on your behalf. You will not need to provide any documentary evidence at this stage, and we will contact you if anything further is required.

If you're a mature age student or don't meet the above requirements, the following will apply to you:

Alternative entry – demonstrate through work experience, hobbies/interests, competencies, other studies that you are eligible for entry. For applicants who have other qualifications, high school studies, or work experiences, you may be required to provide some supporting documentation. This supporting documentation may include one or more of the following:

  • Tasmanian Qualifications Certificate (TCE)
  • Personal competency statement
  • Year 10 (term 4) report
  • TAFE of other VET or Recognised Training Provider academic records
  • Resume or CV
  • Statement on hobbies and other interests which demonstrate numeracy and/or literacy skills

It is likely you will need to submit some documentation to support your application. If you are not sure what documentation to provide, don't worry. An Admissions officer will review your application and will let you know if anything further is needed.

International students

This course is currently not offered to international students.

Articulating into the Associate Degree in Applied Science will be in line with the University’s standard application for credit process. Please see the Articulation/ Credit webpage for more information. Applications for advanced standing can be made upon application to the Associate Degree in Applied Science.

Students wishing to articulate into the University of Tasmania’s Bachelor of Applied Science (top up) course will receive full credit, subject to their chosen specialisation in the Associate Degree and degree.

Students wishing to articulate from the Associate Degree in Applied Science into another bachelor course will gain credit subject to the receiving Faculty's discretion.

Fees & scholarships

Domestic students

Domestic students enrolled in a full fee paying place are charged the Student Services and Amenities Fee but this fee is incorporated in the fees you pay for each unit you enrol in. Full fee paying domestic students do not have to make any additional SSAF payments.

Domestic students enrolled in a Commonwealth supported place will be charged a fee based on the number of units a student enrols in. In 2019, this fee is $44.70 per unit. In 2019, the maximum charge for full time students is $298.

International students

International students should refer to the International Students course fees page to get an indicative course cost.

Each year the University of Tasmania administers an estimated $7 million in scholarships to students from all walks of life, including those who have achieved high academic results; those from low socio-economic backgrounds; students with sporting ability; students undertaking overseas study; and students with a disability.
