Introduction

Design thinking is increasingly applied across a diversity of businesses, including product and service design. ‘Design Thinking’ is driven by human-centred, collaborative and action-oriented practices focused on solving problems. It is a systematic, iterative approach to exploring potential solutions, generating ideas, rapid prototyping and testing of ideas. It applies the ‘design process’ to strategy and innovation. In this subject, students learn the theory, process and implementation of Design Thinking so they can solve interdisciplinary problems in a structured and replicable way.

Teaching

Teaching Pattern

Two hour tutorial and three hours of collaborative workshops per week.

Launceston and Hobart students will study at Foundry campuses.

Assessment
  • Prepare a workshop plan and run-sheet for a design-thinking process to be applied to the identified problem, drawing upon published guides/tool-kits (20%)
  • Engage peers and/or ‘clients’ in the Design Thinking process in response to a wicked problem (40%)
  • Develop a strategic proposal to apply Design Thinking to an existing business or problem (40%)
