University of Tasmania MyLO Privacy Statement
The MyLO online component of your course unit is password-protected
and only those authorised to access the unit web site can do
so. The MyLO component of the unit is hosted on the University
of Tasmania's MyLO teaching server and is administered on behalf
of the online unit coordinator by the Centre for the Advancement of Learning and Teaching
(CALT).
User information stored
The categories of information stored on the University's MyLO
facility about student usage, and the purposes for which such
information is used are as follows:
- Server usage information: The server records details
about your access. This information is available only to CALT-authorised
staff and is used for identifying reported access difficulties,
improving server performance and tracing any breaches of security.
The information is also used for statistical analysis of access
times and locations and other patterns of use - all to aid
systems planning and improvement. In all cases confidentiality
is maintained, and no information gathered by the server on
individuals authorised to use the system is released to any
third party.
- Unit usage information: MyLO automatically tracks
personal information about how you use unit material, including
your first and last log on, how much of the course material
you have accessed, the number of discussion messages you have
posted and read, and whether you have read your mail. It also
keeps transcriptions of chat room conversations and discussion
board postings. MyLO o retains electronic assignment submissions,
and the results of any online assessment. Unit coordinators,
associated teaching staff, and other authorised individuals
with legitimate educational and/or management interests have,
or may be granted, restricted access to this information.
Those granted restricted access understand that this is only
on the condition that they treat the information as strictly
confidential. This information is gathered to assist teaching
and support staff in identifying the needs of students and
for course quality improvement. Unit coordinators may keep
summary records of such information in school/faculty records
systems. Unit coordinators may also compile and store discussion
board postings for teaching and course improvement purposes.
Public versus private information
Public: Your postings to the MyLO discussion
board, chat room, student presentations and student homepage
are public information-·that is, accessible to other students
enrolled in the course unit, unit teaching staff, and other
authorised individuals with legitimate educational interests.
Your MyLO email address is also public. You should therefore
exercise due care when posting to such public MyLO utilities.
Private: Your MyLO email and annotations are
private and can only be read by you. Similarly, no other student
participant can access your assignment submission(s) or quiz
results.; Your responses to any electronic survey carried out
by your lecturer/unit coordinator (including any online evaluation
of the unit) are confidential and anonymous.
Archived information
Your public contributions to the online component of the unit,
your quiz results and assignments are archived (along with the
unit materials) in a secure online units database. The database
is maintained by the CALT (for up to five years) for reference
and review purposes and may be accessed by the unit coordinator
and other staff authorised by the CALT. Your unit coordinator
may also archive the online component of the unit on their own
computer or school/faculty server.
Care about your privacy
The Centre for the Advancement of Learning and Teaching and unit coordinators take the
utmost care to protect the privacy and security of your MyLO-related
personal information from unauthorised access. You can further
protect your privacy by ensuring that you close the browser
window immediately after using an on-campus or publicly accessible
computer.
Please note: Your MyLO unit site may contain links
to other sites, including commercial sites. The University of
Tasmania is not responsible for the privacy practices of such
sites, and you should carefully read the associated privacy
statements.
