Unistart

University Preparation Program (UPP)

The University Preparation Program (UPP) is a flexibly delivered course designed specifically to enable adult learners to become successful university students.

It provides new expertise, motivation and learning habits that are essential for successful university study. Subjects covered include academic reading, research and writing, discussion, debate and presentation.

The use of modern technologies as learning tools is also a focus of the UPP. The program includes a variety of activities, exercises and workshops that will assist participants to become familiar with a range of information presentation methods such as lectures, tutorials, workshops, online learning and flexible attendance requirements.

The UPP is a year-long course which does not attract HECS fees. Students may also choose to study individual units of particular relevance rather than the entire Program.

What are the UPP subjects?

The UPP offers nine units or subjects, up to four of these can be studied each semester.

Study Skills
Key areas covered include motivation, oral presentations, stress and time management, goal and task definition and learning methods.

Written Communications
Formal academic writing skills, particularly essay writing and other written presentation, such as reports.

Communication Skills
Interpersonal communication skills including speaking and listening, negotiation, problem solving and assertiveness.

Academic Literacy & Related Skills
Academic reading, critical thinking, learning and basic research skills.

Using Technology and Applying Technology
Main features of both of these units include:

  • research: computerised and remote library services including electronic databases and the Internet;
  • basic presentation - word processing (MS Word), spreadsheets (MS Excel) and slides (MS PowerPoint); and
  • communication - email, Internet discussions and chat.

Note: As a prerequisite students enrolling in Applying Technology must have successfully
completed UPP050 or its equivalent.

Preliminary Academic Activities
Students will choose two from a range of first year units which are offered in semester 1 or 2 as either attending or distance mode subjects, and attend classes, take part in all learning activities and complete one assignment over a period of 4-6 weeks. They will be allowed slightly longer than normal to complete the assignment and may seek advice and guidance from UPP teaching staff as well as from the teaching academics in that course. Students will submit a brief evaluation of the outcomes of their experience in each academic unit to the UPP teaching staff.

Academic Studies
Students will choose one from a range of first year units which are offered in semester 2, and submit a brief evaluation of the outcomes of their experience in each academic unit to the UPP teaching staff. They will also give an oral presentation and complete a negotiated research project.
Note: As prerequisites a student enrolling in Academic Studies must have successfully completed UPP020 Written Communications and UPP070 Preliminary Academic Activities.

Bridging Maths
This course is designed to meet the needs of students seeking to study at a tertiary level, it aims to develop basic skills and confidence in learning mathematics. It may be possible to provide courses that are aimed at specific course areas, e.g. Humanities, Commerce, Nursing and Primary and Early Childhood Education.
