Andre HemerAndre Hemer is a New Zealand artist currently based in Hobart while completing a PhD in painting at Sydney College of Arts. Through his painting practice he inter-plays digital processes, artifacts, and aesthetics, and investigates how dealing with the contemporary technological condition can draw us back to the physical painting object.

Recent and forthcoming exhibitions include Critical Intent (March 2014), curated by Gary Sangster and Fan Lin, Guangzhou Art Center, Guangzhou, China, LATM (solo screening, December 2013), Münchner Stadtmuseum, Munich, Germany, New Smart Objects (2013), Chalkhorse Gallery, Sydney, and CASS (2012), Christchurch Art Gallery, New Zealand. He has recently been selected for inclusion in '100 Painters of Tomorrow', a book and exhibition to be published in 2014 by Thames and Hudson, London in conjunction with the Institute of Contemporary Art, London.

In his Arts Forum presentation Andre will discuss the importance of painting in a contemporary environment dominated by digital culture; explain how and why the digital environment is changing the way we look at and produce paintings; and reflect on the virtues and vices of living as an Antipodean artist in an international context. Andre will share work from the previous five years of his practice, including painting and site-specific installations projects.
