Gratis

Gratis engages artists who freely mine the physical processes of modern commodity culture. The exhibition spans sculpture, construction, photography and performance and it draws parallels between production culture and creative pursuits by incorporating familiar consumer objects and tropes.

The curator invited the artists to adopt collaborative strategies and, in realising their projects and, in their own ways, each artist has gone about enlisting contributions from others. For some, collaboration was an inherent part of the creative process; for others the initial art exhibition in the Plimsoll will be the occasion for their expertise, artworks and ideas coming together in the gallery where they will engage with the curator and gallery visitors to develop their work. Performative acts by the artists in the Plimsoll Gallery will extend existing artworks or generate new works. The exhibition will gather intensity as the documentation of these acts is displayed to supplement the other works in the gallery.
