Paige RattrayIndependent Theatre and starting your own company

For this Arts Forum Paige will talk about her work as a freelance director in the Australian theatre scene and the formation of her award winning independent theatre company ARTHUR.

Paige is a graduate of NIDA and co-founder of Arthur. In 2011 Paige was Resident Director and in 2010 Affiliate Director with Griffin Theatre Company. Paige has also worked with Sydney Theatre Company, Playwriting Australia, Australian Theatre for Young People, The National Institute of Dramatic Art and Melbourne Theatre Company. In 2011 Paige shared the Best Emerging Writer award at the Melbourne Fringe Festival for Cut Snake (which was also nominated for two Green Room Awards and shortlisted for the Rodney Seaborn Award).

Her directing credits include The Sea Project by Elise Hearst (MUDLARK/ARTHUR), Dirtyland by Elise Hearst (ARTHUR/The Spare Room), Underland by Alexandra Collier (STC/Roughdraft), Cut Snake by Paige Rattray, Amelia Evans and Dan Giovononni (ARTHUR), the devised works Heartbreak Hotel (Griffin) and Blessed Are The Wild (NIDA), Bill W and Dr Bob by Samuel Shem (Carriageworks/Serenity Productions), Motel by Angela Betzien (NIDA/Adelaide Fringe), Bronte by Polly Teale (ATYP Under the Wharf) and Choice Cuts at the 2011 National Playwrights Festival.

In September 2012 Paige directed a new production of The Sea Project for Griffin Independent and in October 2012 directed the third year graduation production of Lieutenant of Inishmoore at NIDA. In 2013 Paige directed Out of Place, by atyp’s Fresh Ink writers, Midlands by Hannah Malarski, Return to Earth by Lally Katz, and return seasons of Cut Snake in Melbourne (winning Best Production VCE Drama awards), Sydney, Brisbane and a tour of regional NSW. In 2014 Paige assisted Andrew Upton on Travelling North at Sydney Theatre Company and directs and devises two new works as part of ARTHUR's multi-episode epic exploration of the Australian psyche The Myth Project, the first being Twin in Melbourne Theatre Company's NEON program and the second The Mesh with Red Stitch.

TCotA Forum is a series of free public lectures held at the Tasmanian College of the Arts (Inveresk). Students and members of the public are welcome to attend. Lectures are presented by staff, visiting scholars from Tasmania, mainland Australia and overseas, industry professionals and artists-in-residence.
