HallKarenSite1'earthspoke: reimagining a convict site'

Histories are held by the land. Calling this history into the present is to make the past visible, to hold the stories in the body, to allow the earth to speak.

Kerry Lodge convict station (active 1834-1848) can be barely glimpsed today as you hurtle south from Launceston on the Midland Highway. Its most visible trace is the bridge over Jinglers Creek, built by the Kerry Lodge convicts using stone from the surrounding area. In conjunction with a three year aracheological program, the Kerry Lodge Art Project is a curatorial project that will bring together local contemporary artists with an archaeological dig to respond to the specific histories of a site and explore the possibilities of envisioning connections to the past through ephemeral and performative work and documentation.earthspoke, an exhibition to be held in Sawtooth Adiscuss the cRI in November, will be the first outcome of the Art Project.

In this forum, I will discuss the convict station site - its history and present form - and the interdisciplinary issues involved in working with an active archaeological investigation. As layers of earth are shifted away, new narratives about the past emerge. The curatorial and creative challenge here is finding a way to speak to and with that pas, to anchor an imaginative connection through the strata of time.

Dr Karen Hall is our Lecturer in Theory, Tasmanian College of the Arts, Inveresk.
