Dr Deborah MalorGROWTH CHANGE INFLUENCE - OR, WHY WE HAVE TCOTA

The exhibition Growth Change Influence - The University Art Schools of Tasmania, opening at QVMAG Royal Park on 31 July, is a facet of the University of Tasmania 125 celebration. It explores the ongoing contribution that the art schools in both Launceston and Hobart have made to the Tasmanian art environment. Since 1884 the art schools in Tasmania, now situated in Hunter Street, Hobart and at Inveresk in Launceston, have produced some of the nation's leading artists and continue to foster the talents of students from Tasmania, interstate and overseas.

The exhibition, and its publication, demonstrates the diversity of talent that has been supported by the schools from the early days of Charpentier's Private School of Art in 1884 through to today's Tasmanian College of the Arts. This talk will background some of the research coming out of the exhibition and speculate on an alternative history that commences when drawing classes were overrun with 'lady artists'.

Dr Deb Malor is a University Associate of the Tasmanian College of the Arts and a Honorary Research Associate of the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery. From 2000 to 2012 she taught in and coordinated the Theory and postgraduate programs of the School of Art (Launceston), the School of Visual & Performing Arts (Inveresk) and the Tasmanian College of the Arts (Inveresk). With Damien Quilliam, Curator of Contemporary Australian Art at QVMAG, she worked on the publication accompanying the exhibition, Growth Change Influence - The Art Schools of the University of Tasmania.
