The Only Way Home is Through the Show…
some porch sitting with Split Britches

Thirty-five years ago, Split Britches began as a play, then it morphed into the name of a queer feminist performance company. In the process of creating numerous shows collaboratively, living together on tour, teaching together in many corners and countries, Split Britches became an aesthetic and a way of life; a theatre defining talent as desire; a way of looking at the collective as an ideal and ideals as the ultimate fulfilment of the collective. Split Britches is a populist way of making theatre and of thinking about art.

And we have always said that we only make one show, the same show over and over, just different words and songs. If we had to say what show that is, we would say a simple show with lots of  things that make us human; mistakes, forgetting lines, not having enough money, being queer, being lesbians, having sets that fall down or pack up in suit cases, and laughing. Always laughing because life is so beautiful and so hard.  Every day is a challenge, every show is a miracle, and the only way home is…through the show.

Lois Weaver and Peggy Shaw of Split Britches will engage in an informal conversation on this long, luxurious life in the theatre.
